2007
06.25

Saturday evening saw me stepping out, with a friend. It was a bright, sunny evening, and we took a cab to town to watch a play at the NCPA. The cab ride was nice, and we got time to chat and catch up on life’s complexities. But as we neared Marine Drive, dark clouds encircled (like vultures) up above.

My friend who has traumatic memories of 26/7, got rather paranoid. I don’t blame her. I missed all the action due to a bout of illness.

There were no tickets available, so post trudging all the way to town, we super-trudged back to Bandra, through vicious bouts of rain, thunder and lightning.

Our cab driver initially cribbed about taking us, as we were drenched from head-to-toe, from a mere dash from the NCPA gate to the Experimental Theatre and back. We offered him extra money.

He was but a boy and was terrified of his cab being ruined. But money talks and bullshit walks, so there.

Big, fat SUVs and the mercs and BMWs of the world sped fast at lighting speed, with not a qualm about  splashing yucky water at mere taxis and pedestrians. Mid-way at Peddar Road, our contraption of a cab broke down, as water had entered the engine. We prayed that it would start again, as the water levels were rising. Finally it moved.

Our cab driver’s upset was at an all-time high. But this did not get in the way of his fascination with an entourage of dignatories passing opposite us. We got to Bandra, and then had a piping hot dinner at China Gate, whilst still drenched. Edible food is some consolation for an uneventful evening. I got home in one peice. But many others didn’t.
